I really like this... excellent work friend! Great key changes, keeps things interesting. The flute/horn solos in the middle are really nice, I like that the piano keeps things going while still being subtle. Loops perfectly. Awesome job! 5 vote.

Thanks a lot! -- but what of the mixing? x

Who knew Bosa was a metalhead?

Bosa responds:

Lol this was years ago!

An excellent composition. High level recording for both the violin and cello parts. I really appreciate the quality of everything here. Excellent use of dynamics overall. I love it when a piece containing sampled instruments effectively employs a wide range of dynamics. Though from around 2:26 to 2:50 or so, it the crescendo/decrescendo thing you've got going on sounds a bit forced and less natural. However, it still achieves its intended effect.

I understand this is intended to be more of a "demo" for the film, so with that in mind, I note some themes just falling off in what feels like the middle of a phrase (like at 2:11 and 3:55). This could make perfect sense when applied to a film, but as a standalone piece you lack a few transitions.

This is top notch work. You have a lot of talent. I'm going to check out your other stuff, and I'm very interested to hear what else you'll come up with! You'll be a contender here on NG.

I really enjoyed listening to this piece. Your use of percussion is what makes it, I think. You've got the "trailer music" thing down. Good job conveying emotion through this.

It's hard working with virtual instruments to achieve natural sounding changes in dynamics and whatnot. I noticed a few times the horns are playing a soft melody, only to come in the next measure with much louder chord. I don't know if this was intended or not, but it sounded a little distracting. Overall, I thought the horns overpowered the strings in the mix. The ending was a bit abrupt, but that doesn't always matter in a trailer score.

All that said, you've got a fantastic piece of music here. Stick with it, I can see you scoring trailers for major films someday!

I really like the chordal structure you have going on here. Reminds me a lot of Gershwin, which is awesome. I feel like the drums detract from this a lot. If it were me, I would either cut them out completely or move them to half time. They sound far too busy compared to the rest of the piece. Also, they seem a little one dimensional to me.

Other than that, I really like this! You're a talented pianist. Keep it up!

BlazingDragon responds:

Unfortunately, my drum palette is limited to EZDrummer, and I don't have the jazz add-on. I would love to use brushes and do more subtle work on the snare. Drums are admittedly a weakness for me though. :-/

Thank you for the constructive criticism! It was helpful.

I really dig the bells. You should make this bigger. If you are in dire need of a vocalist, I could ask my wife. She might be up for it.

I really like this! I could even see this as part of the Skyrim soundtrack. The ethereal voices are stunningly effective. You've made my evening a bit more enjoyable, friend.

Bosa responds:

Thank you. I actually got the same feeling myself when I finished the choir's parts. It is good to see that the efforts were noticed.

Thank you again, my friend.

I really hope that you get to compose for an anime along the lines of Darker than Black someday. You deserve it man. Your stuff inevitably reminds of Yoko Kanno, which is a fantastic thing.

Not a bad song, good sir! My only critique is, well... Not sure if you listen to Two Steps from Hell or not, but: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRLdhF Vzqt4

See 0:42.

I know this happens sometimes by accident, but that sounds awfully familiar man.

Warhector responds:

Hey, thanks for comment. It that have happened before, yes. If you wonder why this would help you, either way it is a very interesting video:

Actually I came up with this melody by playing the chords for Time by Hans Zimmer, which is a big inspiration.

Edit-
Edited more variation to the melody, which resembles less. Thanks for the tip.

Man, excellent piece you have here. I wasn't expecting the epic! Mixed well, good guitar tones, but my favorite is the percussion you have throughout. The "sound design" aspect of this is what really makes it, I think. The glitched drums and industrial sounding percussion is great.

You will be a contender in this contest, good sir.

KKSlider60 responds:

Thank you for your insight, much appreciated. :3
Good luck in the final stages of this contest,
